The Secret My Mama Knew That Took Me 50 Years to Understand
Purpose: To remind you that peace isn’t found by choosing between the future and the present. It’s found when you hold both at the same time.
Have you ever spent so much time looking forward to something that, when it finally arrived, you barely noticed it?
I have.
For years, I believed the next trip, the next opportunity, the next event, the next accomplishment would finally be the thing that made me feel fulfilled. The problem wasn’t that I always had something to look forward to. The problem was that I was already mentally living there before I ever arrived.
And because of that...
I missed the miracle that was happening right in front of me.
My Mama used to tell me something over and over again:
“Always have something to look forward to.”
She believed it with everything she had.
But there was another lesson she taught me—not with words, but with the way she lived.
Be where your feet are.
For most of my life, those two ideas felt like they were fighting each other.
How can I be excited about tomorrow while fully living today?
This morning, while reading Proverbs 9, everything clicked.
It felt like that scene in The Goonies when they finally understand One-Eyed Willy’s map. The clues had been there the whole time. I just couldn’t see what they were pointing to.
Then it became crystal clear.
Every moment we’re living today... was once something we were looking forward to.
If we never stop long enough to soak it in, then what was the point of looking forward to it in the first place?
That’s the gift.
That’s the Inchstone.
Proverbs 9 reminds us that wisdom and foolishness sound surprisingly similar.
Both call out to us.
Both make promises.
Both invite us to come closer.
But they could not lead to more different destinations.
Wisdom is calling. It’s available to everyone. And its return compounds for a lifetime. (Proverbs 9:1-6)
Wisdom requires today’s bread.
Daily bread can only be eaten today.
Yesterday’s bread is cheaper for a reason.
You cannot borrow tomorrow’s wisdom or live off yesterday’s revelation. You have to be present enough to receive what God is offering today. (Proverbs 9:7-11)
Wisdom rewards you.
Ignoring it always comes with a cost. (Proverbs 9:12)
Meanwhile...
Foolishness is also calling.
It’s loud.
It’s available.
And it will do everything in its power to distract you from the one thing that makes it powerless:
Wisdom.

God isn’t asking us to choose between dreaming about tomorrow and appreciating today.
He invites us to do both.
Hope for what’s ahead.
Honor what’s in front of you.
Mind — Intention
Today, intentionally notice one moment you’ve been waiting for.
Maybe it’s dinner with your family.
Maybe it’s your morning coffee.
Maybe it’s the work you’ve prayed for.
Maybe it’s simply another sunrise.
Receive it.
Skills — Action
Write down one thing you’re excited about in the future.
Then write down three things you’ll intentionally notice today.
Protect both.
Dream forward.
Live present.
That’s where peace lives.
Today I understand what my Mama was trying to teach me all along.
“Always have something to look forward to.”
Not because tomorrow is better than today...
But because today was once the tomorrow you couldn’t wait for.
Mama...
